Macbeth
Unit overview
This semester, everything we did revolved around the Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth. We started by practicing our understanding of Shakespearean language, and learning about the historical background of the play. Throughout reading the play, we continuously had assignments or projects. One was creating a collage that displays different themes and the imagery in Macbeth. The next project was being assigned a monologue from the play, and having to perform it in front of the class. Furthermore, we wrote a creative text from a character’s perspective, explaining our reasonings or thinking behind several actions. Most recently, we wrote a literary analysis essay, where we could choose from different questions. I decided to analyse whether or not Macbeth was a tragic hero, and how Shakespeare creates sympathy for him. Lastly, we had an in class debate, argumenting whether Macbeth or Lady Macbeth were more evil. I enjoyed creating the Imagery collage the most, exploring the idea that sin is a disease that affects both the character and the state.
Looking Forward
Next year, I really want to improve my writing skills. I don’t find much time to read, and my word choice and expressions consequently suffer. Furthermore, I am not very careful when editing rough drafts. Next year, I would enjoy reading and analyzing more Shakespearean plays, as it fascinates me how ideas and themes in the 1500’s are still relevant today. I also enjoy having to read between and behind the lines in order to understand a text's content and the message.
