Unit 5 - Interwar Period
Unit overview
This unit carries on from the previous unit on the events and outcomes of the Interwar period. Students will gain an overview of WWII by participating in a group jigsaw presentation and sharing work with each other. The focus of the unit is on WWII in the Pacific with emphasis on the Americans versus the Japanese. The class will watch and analyze the mini-series The Pacific to gain an understanding of the effects of WWII on the geography and people involved. Students will participate in class discussion and create maps to illustrate the significance of WWII in Asia.
How did WWII affect Asia?
WWII hugely affected Asia (a lot more than WWI) due to the Japanese involvement. Overall, south-east Asia was scarred by WWII. The Japanese conquered much of Asia's land and took the inhabitants of those places prisoners to send them to POWs. This included many foreigners as allies were living in their colonies overseas. Areas in the pacific were 'destroyed' by American and Japanese fighting and bombings. WWII in some ways also liberated Asian countries from their colonists, as with the end of WWII, many of those countries declared themselves independent.
Strength
Use multiple sources to synthesize and integrate information
Explanation
Other than in the previous units, this was actually my strength this time, as I really tried to find different sources for everything.
How did Geography affect WWII?
Geography played a major role in WWII. In the pacific, where mainly the Americans and Japanese were fighting each other, and the geographical locations of places majorly influenced further battle locations and strategies. The Japanese's plan, for example, was to cut off Americans from Australia. Americans however were trying to prevent this, and attacked Japan working their way inland island per island. At the actual battle locations, geography in the meaning of climate and landscape affected the Americans as they were not used fighting in any of the conditions they were confronted with.
Weakness
Analyze and describe the causes and outcomes of World War II
Explanation
I found it rather difficult to understand this for this unit, as the jigsaw presentations were not 100% clear and I never caught up on the missed information.
Evidence
As a class, we created a jigsaw presentation about WWII. Every student was assigned a specific topic and then we all combined our presentations into one. Below is my part of the presentation, which was about World War II in North America.
