Unit 3 - Innovative Inventions

In this unit we learned about how innovative thinking changes the world. We started by doing some research on big projects and inventions that are happening right now, such as Google Loon. This invention’s goal is to bring the internet to places that do not currently have access. The hope of the project is that by giving everyone access to the internet it will bring positive change to the world. We then starting thinking about everyday inventions that exist. Some are small and some are big, but all bring some conveience or positive change to the person using them. I researched and shared with the class an invention called the  ‘Ab Hancer’. During this part we worked on our presentation and sales pitch skills. Then I had to think of my own invention. I had three initial ideas, and narrowed it down to one. I decided to design a ‘To Do Stamp’. I first had to make sure I planned what I wanted the invention to look like, and most of all carefully planned all my measurements. After learning how to use a new 3D designing software called 123D Design, I began to design my invention. I had to print a couple of test prototypes before my final design functioned and was printed. I also added artistic elements so that it would be attractive for people to want to buy. At the end of the unit I presented my invention in front of the class, using good presentation and sales skills.

Unit Overview
Enduring Understandings: How Can Innovation Change the World in a Positive Way?

Innovation can change the world in a positive way, as inventions are what constantly improves our quality of life. Every object we use in our everyday life is or originates from an invention. Innovative thinking and people that do think differently, look at the world trying to identify simple problems and find a way to solve it are the ones that make our everyday life how it is.

Enduring Understandings: Why is the revision process important and how do we use revision in our design process?

The revision process is crucial, as your first invention will never be a perfect prototype. You use it by reflecting on your inventions after every prototype. You have a draft, then you should test it and identify what should be changed in order to improve the invention.

Reflection on Standards
Strength

Technology Operation and Concepts:

Demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems and operations

Explanation

I think my strength was understanding how to print independently. Very soon after we got the printer, I was able to remember the steps to properly print. I can print without assistance unless there is a problem with the printer.

Weakness

Creating:

Generate, organize, and refine creative ideas.

Plan for Improvement

I think this was my weakest area this unit, because except for the stamp holder and the text, I did not have any artistic designs on my object. It wasn’t even that I did not understand what artistic design is, it was more of not knowing how to incorporate it.
